20 CFR Part 404 Subpart P Appendix 2 — Medical-Vocational Guidelines

The Grid Rules direct findings of disabled / not-disabled based on age, education, past relevant work, and residual functional capacity. The Grid is mandatory at Step 5 when exertional limitations alone are at issue. Non-exertional limitations (mental, postural, environmental) may require the ALJ to deviate. The age categories are 18–49, 50–54 (closely approaching advanced age), 55–59 (advanced age), and 60+ (closely approaching retirement age) — each shifts the Grid materially.
